TomorrowNow Data Access Framework for Next-Gen Weather Technologies

TomorrowNow Data Access Framework for Next-Gen Weather Technologies

An OSIRIS Data Service with a series of restful Application Programming Interfaces (API), geospatial-enabled image services, and Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP) services. These three different service offerings to support data discovery, access, and distribution to the user base as Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and as direct application inputs to decision-to-support tools.

Overview

The development of a data access framework for next-generation weather technologies, specifically for the OSIRIS project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and in support of the seed breeding ecosystem in East Africa. The project focused on the design of a data access system to support the seed breeding ecosystem in East Africa, particularly for the Climate Bespoke Atmospheric Model (CBAM) data set.

Key aspects of the included:

  1. Cloud-based storage (AWS S3) for netCDF and Zarr files, and PostgreSQL with PostGIS for structured data.
  2. Using STAC, OGC API - Records, custom APIs, Intake, and the AWS open data registry for metadata and search.
  3. Native cloud platform access, OPENDAP, OGC API - Coverages/WCS, OGC API - Features/WFS, custom APIs, and Pangeo/Zarr.
  4. Recommendations of both weather intelligence companies and seed breeding scientists, emphasizing cloud-native solutions, open source technologies, and analysis-ready data.
  5. Details on relevant seed breeding tools and platforms like Climatrends, 1000Farms project, ClimMob Trial Analysis Software, and Bestiapop.

There are various stakeholders in the project including Tomorrow.io, CGIAR (1000Farms), and Regrow.
