Water Quantity and Quality Monitoring
SANSA Water Quality and Quantity Monitoring System - Phase 1
Overview
Kartoza successfully delivered Phase 1 of the SANSA Water Quality and Quantity Monitoring Project, developing an advanced Earth Observation-based system for assessing and analyzing water resources across South Africa. Key features include automated monthly generation of water indices like AWEI for water extent, NDCI for chlorophyll detection, and NDTI for turbidity, using Sentinel-2 data at 20m resolution integrated via Google Earth Engine pipelines. The system provides pollution detection tools, time-series analytics, downloadable COG/TIFF outputs, a secure admin dashboard, and public API endpoints for nationwide provincial mapping.
All deliverables underwent rigorous testing, validation, and handover, enabling SANSA to monitor water risks, algal blooms, and sediment pollution with scalable, automated national datasets.
