GIS & Software Sales Consultant

Purpose Of The Job

To maximise business growth and profitability by selling Kartoza’s hosting, consulting, support, training and other services and products, providing expert technical advice and building long-term client partnerships rooted in the value of open-source technology.

Responsibilities

  1. Sales strategy: Develop Kartoza’s sales strategy with management and implement it.
  2. Technical sales and demonstrations: Conduct high-level demonstrations of GeoServer, GeoNode, G3W, GeoSight, our in-house developed Kartoza Cloudbench platform, QGIS  and related spatial software to showcase functionality and cost-value benefits to potential clients.
  3. Customer needs analysis: Analyse client pain points to recommend appropriate GIS tools, training solutions or professional services (e.g., SDI, database design or QGIS plugin development).
  4. Business development: Actively identify new sales opportunities and manage existing client accounts within key market verticals.
  5. Solution proposal: Prepare technical-commercial offers (tenders, quotations and proposals) ensuring alignment with customer requirements and Kartoza’s strategic goals.
  6. Product training and support: Provide technical input during the pre-sales process and support customer success through training and support.
  7. Relationship management: Maintain strong, reliable relationships with clients by delivering professional and knowledgeable service.
  8. Work with marketing: Stay current with industry trends in open-source GIS, QGIS, QGIS plugins, and competitive proprietary technologies. Use social media and targeted marketing to build awareness of our products. Plan the creation of materials on our YouTube channel. Work with our management and marketing teams on marketing strategy, understanding the market, product and service prioritisation, pricing etc.  
  9. CRM administration: Maintain accurate records of sales activities and customer information in our CRM systems. Ensure the CRM is optimised for maximum lead generation and conversions.

Education And Skills

  1. Educational background: Either a degree in marketing with knowledge of open source GIS or a degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, computer science, software development or a related field.
  2. Technical expertise: High proficiency in QGIS (including plugins) or other open source GIS tools, geospatial data and related business processes and a strong understanding of how they compare to proprietary technology like Esri.
  3. Sales experience: 3–5 years of professional experience in GIS software sales, technical consulting, or geospatial roles. Proven ability to meet sales performance standards and targets. Proven sales record.
  4. Sales experience: Generate leads from cold calls, build relationships and clearly articulate proposals and solutions to prospective customers.
  5. Communication: Strong verbal and written skills, with the ability to convey complex spatial concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  6. Analytical ability: Solid understanding of spatial data formats, coordinate systems, data modelling, algorithms used in GIS and GIS workflows.
  7. Languages: Strong command of English (proficiency in additional languages relevant to Kartoza’s global regions is a plus).

Location

Kartoza operates with a highly distributed global team. This position is eligible for remote work, subject to the following operational conditions:

  1. Geographic location is open, within limits: We need minimum time overlaps with most of our team. You need a distraction-free work environment with reliable, redundant power and reliable, redundant, high bandwidth internet.
  2. Equipment: Kartoza provides standard work hardware (typically a linux laptop and backup device). Bring your own internet connection and working environment.
  3. Travel: You must be able and willing to travel if and when required to clients, conferences or for other sales-related reasons.
